This song resonates with every Christian in the world, regardless of background, tribe, color, age or personality.
MercyMe are up to their genius best with a song that hooks from you verse 1 and keeps you emotionally glued to the very end.
It’s also one of those rare songs where the video enhances the mood and lyrics of the song instead of making no sense.
So if you are in a slump of some sort, or feeling like life doesn’t mean anything anymore, listen to ‘Flawless by MercyMe’.
The lyrics will put a smile on your face soon enough. Part of the chorus goes…
No matter the bumps
No matter the bruises
No matter the scars
Still the truth is
The cross has made
The cross has made you flawless
I term it the ultimate song to wipe away your past.
MercyMe have a long history of releasing beautifully anointed songs that speak universally to all of us. This one is no exception because it deals with one area that affects almost all of us – guilt.
MercyMe is an American contemporary Christian music band founded in Greenville, Texas. The band consists of vocalist Bart Millard, keyboardist James Bryson, percussionist Robby Shaffer, bassist Nathan Cochran and guitarists Michael Scheuchzer and Barry Graul.
When I was working in a local Christian radio station many years ago, I remember scheduling ‘I Can Only Imagine’ on the station’s weekly playlist, listening to it for the first time and asking myself, “Where on earth did this song come from?”
It was that good.
Our radio hosts reported it as one of the most requested songs of that year.
12 months later, every radio station (gospel and secular) had it on high rotation.
TV Stations took up the cue and aired it during their interlude segments.
Bart Millard wrote “I Can Only Imagine” in an old, abandoned daycare center that also served as the band’s makeshift studio. In 2010, it became the first song in Christian music to exceed 1 million downloads according to Christianity Today.
Thank God, Bart decided to pursue music instead of becoming a football player!
Then came “Bless Me Indeed” based on the prayer of Jabez.
It’s a biblically sound cry of a hungry heart, a plea to expand and taste every blessing in God’s treasure chest.
The Story Behind Flawless
Flawless is included in the 2014 album, ‘Welcome to the New’
About the album, Bart says:
We were at church, and some kids were making fun of my son. And he started singing ‘Greater’ – ‘You are Holy, righteous and redeemed.’ I just started bawling. That’s the reason we made the record.”
The message is about the condemning power of guilt that traps us and prevents us from believing we can ever be accepted in the community and most importantly by God.
Guilt Tears Us All Up
Guilt has the power of reaching down to your very soul and ripping all the joy, victory and purpose from your life with a blood-wrenching tear. And all the devil needs to do is slip in one casual thought when you least expect it, “Remember when you…?”
